The Great Adventure South
Happy New Year 2008
01/06/08 - Sorry we have been so slow with the adventure stories. We
decided to take an intermission in the great adventure for the
holidays. We made it to Palm Coast, FL and laid Magic up for a month,
rented a car and drove back to Annapolis to be with the Jeff's.
Wouldn't you know that we left Florida on the only 80 degree day we
have had in this trip.
I can't remember where I stopped the e-mails but we did make it
through Georgia. Did not anchor out anymore due to the big tides and
fast moving currents. We were to chicken to risk another anchor
episode.
If you live in Georgia and want to go to the ocean beaches you must
visit a sea island because the coast of Georgia is marsh land. We
visited some of those islands and each one offers a different
experience. Ferry's are very important to the islands. This reminds me
of the try for a ferry from Rock Hall, MD to Baltimore that never
happened; not enough people to support the service. The ferry's in
Georgia seem to be doing great. We had a courtesy car for a visit to
St. Simons Island and courtesy car/bikes for Jekyll Island (this is
the island where the Federal Reserve banking system was formed).
Here is some background info -
12/06 Hello Florida - First stop in Fl was Fernandia Beach. Cute town
did some Xmas shopping. Tom has insured his right foot. We don't know
how but it is all swollen and painful.
12/07 Departed for Palm Cove Marina. Very shallow in this marina so we
had to do donuts waiting for the tide to change so we could enter the
basin. Next morning thick fog so waited for clearing and tide to
depart. Lowest water we saw was 5 1/2 feet and we draw 4.9 feet. Too
close for comfort.
12/08 Arrived in St. Augustine. Took slip at the Anchorage Inn Marina
across the ICW from the town of St. Augustine. There was a shuttle bus
over the bridge of Lions to a touring train so we rode that to do some
sightseeing. This worked out well with Tom's foot. Stayed 2 days here.
The fort fires off a cannon once in a while just to warn off any
potential invaders. We had dolphins in the marina last night.
12/10 Departed for Palm Coast to lay the boat up and drive back to
Annapolis.
We have the car packed for the trip back to FL and are leaving
today. Had the dodger window fixed and the seams re-sewed in both the
dodger and the cover. It took us approx 2 months to get to Florida and
2 days to travel back to Annapolis by car. Doesn't say much for quick
travel by sailboat.
So glad to see some friends while home and spend lots of time with my
little Jeff and his Dad. Little one was so glad to see us and we all
had a great Xmas and New Year's. We have now set our sights on Key
West so you will be hearing about the next episode adventures soon.
Hope some of you can come down for a visit with the gypsy boat.
